A recent change in the city of Boston zoning bylaws now allows owner-occupied single, two and three family homes to add an additional Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) to their homes as-of-right, or to bring up to code and register a pre-existing one.

 

We were asked to evaluate the existing basement unit in a three-family home and propose a plan with the upgrades required for registration.

Our evaluation uncovered a number of items the owners had not previously been aware of. We attended with them an online ADU design workshop given by the city of Boston to discuss the changes in more detail, and we proposed the most feasible solution with a detailed list of required upgrades.
