TOWNHOUSE
Gut Renovation
Beacon Hill, Boston
This gracious Beacon Hill townhouse needed a substantial makeover to become both an oasis of privacy in living and working for a busy couple, and a home for frequent entertaining and family visits.
The design evolved around the existing elevator and mechanical rooms. Stairs were redesigned to allow for seamless transitions between floors. The first floor was opened up for formal entertaining and large family gatherings, and the floor below as a more intimate garden level space. Directly connected by the elevator, the top two floors and the roof deck were designed for more private entertaining events and guest overnight stays. The middle floor became a comfortable private master suite.
The top two floors were transformed into multifunctional flexible spaces. A small kitchenette facilitated the owners' comfortable entertaining, living or working, with rooms available for an office or a gym, or for increased privacy for visiting guests.
Careful attention to detail was given to top floor with a new glass stair that flooded it with light, and a landing seating area that opened up sweeping views of the city.
